On January 6, His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, a former visting professor at the Gregorian University, announced for February 18, 2012 a consistory in which 22 new cardinals will be elevated. Among them are 14 former students and/or teachers of the Gregorian University Consortium schools:
Giuseppe Betori, Archbishop of Florence, Italy; received his licentiate in theology at the Gregorian University and his doctorate in Sacred Scripture at the Biblical Institute.
Domenico Calcagno, President of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See; received his doctorate in Dogmatic Theology at the Gregorian University.
Santos Abril y Castelló, Archpriest of Saint Mary Major Basilica in Rome; studied Canon law at the Gregorian University.
Manuel Monteiro de Castro, Head of the Apostolic Penitentiary; studied Canon Law at the Gregorian University.
Francesco Coccopalmerio, President of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts; studied and lectured on Canon Law at the Gregorian University.
Thomas Christopher Collins, Archbishop of Toronto; studied Theology at the Gregorian University and received his licentiate on Sacred Scriptures at the Biblical Institute.
Joăo Bráz de Aviz, Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life; received his licentiate in Theology at the Gregorian University.
Timothy Michael Dolan, Archbishop of New York; visiting professor at the Gregorian University, Theology Faculty.
Willem Jacobus Eijk, Archbishop of Utrecht, Netherlands; guest student at the Gregorian University's Theology Faculty.
John Tong Hon, Bishop of Hong Kong, studied Theology at the Gregorian University.
Edwin Frederick O’Brien, Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem; guest student at the Gregorian University's Theology Faculty.
Giuseppe Versaldi, President of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See; received his licentiate in Psychology and in Canon Law at the Gregorian University. He became professor emeritus at the Greg’s Psychology Institute.
Karl Josef Becker, S.J., Consultant of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, taught at the Gregorian University from 1969 to 2003, when he became Professor Emeritus.
Belgium Prospero Grech, O.S.A., Priest of Order of St. Augustine; Consultant of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, received his doctorate in Theology at the Gregorian University in 1953 and licentiate at the Biblical Institute in 1954. Taught at the Biblical Institute.
